Deborah & Michael North Carolina Children’s Theatre Artistic Director Deborah B. Jaenicke
Children up and down the East coast know her as Miss Hannigan, Cruella DeVille, The Wicked Witch of the West, Sleeping Beauty’s Mother or The Queen Bee. Adults refer to her as the former director of the Kaleidoscope Theatre School of Acting and Performing Arts or the creative force behind The Wilkins Academy of Dramatic Arts. Deborah Jaenicke has worn many costumes and held many titles during her 35-year theatrical career. But her heart has remained in children’s theater since her first role at the Barker Playhouse when she was 9-years-old. “Miss Deborah,” who grew up on the stage, has performed in more than 200 productions. She has worked in regional and community theater and performed professionally with national touring companies. While Miss Deborah has many serious and comical stories from her career, you’ll most often hear her speaking about the children that have crossed her path. How they learned to sing, dance and act. How they matured and became stage savvy. How they went on to get roles in other shows. How they evolved into careers in the arts. How shy, withdrawn children opened up and developed confidence and poise. How they learned discipline, respect and an appreciation for the arts. Her many “theater children” have gone on to perform in movies, commercials, tours and Broadway productions. NCCT Movement Instructor Kendrix Singletary Kendrix has a performance background that includes training at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He comes to NCCT after performing as a principal performer for the Carnival Cruise Lines. He has played leads roles in productions of "Miss Saigon," "The Wiz," "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." He has been seen in the movies "Freedom Song" and "The Company." He is currently working on his debut album. He believes in "giving back to children in his community." NCCT is pleased to have him working with the children of the troupe. Kendrix is available to teach at NCCT because he's spending time with his newborn daughter. In November, Kendrix and his wife Juliet welcomed a new star into their lives, daughter Kadence Ann. We welcome Kendrix as part of the growing NCCT family. For more about Kendrix and to listen to a track from his upcoming CD, go to www.myspace.com/kjsingletary
